Why this Guide Exists
This guide exists for one simple reason: when I started teaching in the early 1990s, new instructors were essentially launched into the field at warp speed with little more than their instructor’s course behind them and a hopeful “good luck.” Once the certification was complete, the real learning began alone. There were no field manuals, no shared playbooks, and no veteran logs to consult when things went sideways at a busy intersection or during a student’s third consecutive panic stop.
Over the decades, through thousands of lessons, countless students, and every possible road condition Ontario could throw at us, I’ve learned that good instruction is not just about knowing the rules of the road. It’s about timing, judgment, adaptability, emotional awareness, and knowing when to take control and when to let a student struggle safely through a problem.
This manual is my attempt to close the gap I experienced early in my career.
Think of it less as a rigid rulebook and more as an instructor's field log.
It’s practical, experience-driven, occasionally opinionated, and built for real-world use. It’s designed to help instructors navigate the unpredictable moments that don’t appear in official curricula, the moments that define whether a lesson succeeds or quietly goes off the rails.
Most importantly, this is a living, breathing document. It’s being assembled on the fly, refined through experience, my personal memories, and updated continuously as new situations, insights, and best practices emerge. If the road teaches something new tomorrow, this manual will adapt accordingly.
No red alerts. No prime directive violations. Just hard-earned guidance from the field, shared so the next generation of instructors doesn’t have to figure everything out alone.
