My Journey
Although I’ve been a licensed Ontario driving instructor for 36 years, my journey through the quadrant hasn’t been a straight line down the center lane.
I haven’t always taught defensive driving. Over the years, I’ve taken scheduled shore leave and the occasional unexpected slingshot around the sun, exploring other fields of work and academia along the way.
Before I ever took the helm of a dual-brake vehicle, I served in many capacities across the federation of employment: bus boy, asbestos removal worker, scrap metal yard hand, vehicle scrapyard technician stripping axles and rebuilding them for resale, accounts payable clerk for a large corporation, machine operator and shipper/receiver at a book binding company; welder, taxi driver, and counselor at a federal-level halfway house.
I also attended Laurentian University, where I earned a B.A. in Philosophy, graduating cum laude (i.e., with honours). Turns out asking “What is the good life?” pairs surprisingly well with teaching someone how to merge safely at the posted legal speed limit.
No matter where I’ve gone or what uniform I’ve worn, I’ve always found my way back to driver training. Other jobs eventually left me restless. This one never does.
To me, it’s the best job in the world.
You meet new people every day. You make a real difference in their lives. You get a mobile office with a constantly changing window view. Where else do you get paid to teach, coach, observe human behavior, and occasionally say, “Let’s try that left turn again” with calm authority?
I absolutely love teaching and refining my craft. Every lesson is a new scenario. Every student is a new mission. There is always something new to learn.

Supplemental: Still happily on the bridge. Engines steady. Curiosity engaged. Mission ongoing.
