🚦 Common Mistakes I See Every Week
🟢 Public Lesson
This lesson is safe for students, parents, and general viewers.
These aren’t “bad driver” habits. They’re normal beginner patterns that show up again and again. The win is simple: spot it, name it, drill it, repeat it.
✅ Use this page as a weekly checklist before lessons, road tests, or parent practice sessions.
⏱️ 1) Turning Too Late (or Too Early)
What I see: the turn begins after the corner is already “behind” the driver, or it starts too early and crosses lines.
Quick fix idea: Aim with your eyes first, then steer.
Drill: “Point the Nose”
- Pick a quiet right turn.
- Before you steer, look at the spot you want the front of the car to point (your exit lane).
- Say out loud: “Eyes… then hands.”
- Repeat 6 to 10 times.
Road test reminder: Smooth turns look calm because the driver planned them.
👀 2) Not Scanning Enough (Tunnel Vision)
What I see: eyes locked forward, mirrors ignored, hazards missed.
Quick fix idea: scanning is a rhythm, not a panic.
Drill: “Mirror Timer”
- On a calm road, run this loop:
- Front
- Left mirror
- Front
- Rear mirror
- Front
- Right mirror
- Keep it light, not robotic.
- Do this for 2 minutes, twice per drive.
Bonus: Add shoulder checks only when needed (lane changes, merges, pulling out, etc.).
🛑 3) Rolling Stops / Stop Sign “Creeping”
What I see: the car slows… but never fully stops, or creeps past the line without a clear plan.
Quick fix idea: stop, settle, then decide.
Drill: “3-Second Stop”
- Stop fully at the stop line (or before the crosswalk).
- Count: one-one-thousand, two-one-thousand, three-one-thousand
- Then proceed when safe.
Pro tip: If you need visibility, do a second stop at the edge after the first full stop.
📏 4) Lane Position Drift (Hugging One Side)
What I see: riding the right edge, crowding the center line, or wandering.
Quick fix idea: use references inside the car.
Drill: “Lane Anchors”
- Find a straight road.
- Choose two anchors:
- Left anchor: your left leg area aligned with the lane center
- Right anchor: a point on the hood lined up with the lane edge
- Hold steady for 60 seconds, relax shoulders, repeat.
Goal: Centered lane position that stays consistent through bumps and curves.
🧱 🐢 5) Braking Too Late (or Too Hard)
What I see: braking happens close to the stop, then gets “grabby.”
Quick fix idea: earlier, lighter braking is smoother and safer.
Drill: “Feather Brake”
- Pick a known stop (light or stop sign).
- Start braking earlier than you think.
- Keep pressure light and steady, then ease off slightly at the end.
- Repeat 5 times.
Road test look: smooth stops feel like an elevator arriving gently.
📍 6) Turning From the Wrong Place (Wide or Tight)
What I see: wide turns that drift into the wrong lane, or tight turns that hit the curb.
Quick fix idea: set up your position before you turn.
Drill: “Setup Then Turn”
- Before the turn:
- Slow down
- Check mirrors
- Set lane position
- Only then: steer smoothly into the exit lane.
- Repeat on 3 right turns + 3 left turns.
🦺 👁️🗨️ 7) Not Checking Blind Spots at the Right Time
What I see: shoulder checks done too early (then forgotten), or done mid-turn.
Quick fix idea: blind spot check should happen right before you move sideways.
Drill: “Signal, Mirror, Shoulder, Go”
Practice this exact sequence:
- Signal
- Mirror
- Shoulder check
- Move
Repeat 5 lane changes on a quiet multi-lane road (with a qualified supervisor if required).
🪗 8) Speed Control “Accordion” (Speed Up, Slow Down, Speed Up)
What I see: inconsistent speed, especially when the driver is thinking hard.
Quick fix idea: stabilize the foot, stabilize the brain.
Drill: “Steady 50”
- Choose a road with a steady limit (like 50 km/h).
- Hold within 48 to 52 for 2 minutes.
- If you drift, correct gently (no stomping).
Parent practice tip: speed consistency is a confidence builder.
⚖️ 9) Right-of-Way Hesitation (or Over-Politeness)
What I see: stopping when you should go, or waving people through randomly.
Quick fix idea: be predictable, not “nice.”
Drill: “Decision Rule”
At intersections ask:
- Do I have the right of way?
- Is it safe and clear? If yes: go promptly.
If no: wait calmly. No bonus points for confusion.
🅿️ 10) Parking Without a Plan
What I see: turning the wheel and hoping the car lands somewhere acceptable.
Quick fix idea: parking is geometry with repeatable steps.
Drill: “Pause Points”
For any parking type, practice:
- Stop at the setup point
- Check surroundings
- Turn + creep
- Stop at the next reference
- Adjust slowly
Rule: If you’re not sure, stop the car and reset. Stopping is allowed.
🧪 Weekly Mini-Challenge (10 Minutes)
Pick two items from this page and do:
- 3 minutes: drill #1
- 3 minutes: drill #2
- 2 minutes: repeat the harder one
- 2 minutes: calm drive, breathe, scan, smooth
Consistency beats intensity. Every time. 🧠⚙️
